Tell Congress to support the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act!

Plastic litter on the beachTell your members of Congress to hold corporations and plastic producers accountable for the plastic crisis by supporting the groundbreaking Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act of 2021.

This landmark legislation, recently introduced by Senator Jeff Merkley and Representative Alan Lowenthal, aims to address plastic pollution from the root source: production. In an effort to finally “turn off the tap” on plastic production, it will:

  • Shift responsibility for waste management and recycling to the manufacturers of packaging, containers, and foodservice products;
  • Prohibit plastic waste from being shipped to developing countries;
  • Expand the definition of toxic chemicals and prohibit those chemicals from being used in products covered in the legislation;
  • Ban single-use plastic carryout bags;
  • Ban certain single-use plastic products that are not recyclable;
  • Invest in US domestic recycling and composting infrastructure; and
  • Put a moratorium on new and expanding plastic production facilities and infrastructure projects until the EPA updates and/or creates vital environmental and health regulations to protect low-resourced and marginalized communities.

Plastic pollution is accelerating the climate crisis, harming our health, and threatening our rights. Now is the time to finally #BreakFreeFromPlastic pollution once and for all.
